Raye rose to prominence after her guest appearances on the commercially successful singles "By Your Side" by Jonas Blue, "You Don't Know Me" by Jax Jones, as well as her co-performances on "Secrets" (with Regard) and "Bed" (with David Guetta and Joel Corry). In 2021, she gained some media attention after her departure from Polydor Records after allegedly being refused to release her studio debut album and left in favour for an independent career.

Her 2022 single "Escapism" (featuring 070 Shake), which first earned virality on TikTok, became her first song to peak atop the UK Singles Chart. Furthermore, it reached the top ten in over 22 countries, and became her first entry on the US Billboard Hot 100. It was preceded by the release of her debut studio album My 21st Century Blues (2023), which received both commercial success and widespread critical acclaim, earning Album of the Year nominations at the 2023 Mercury Prize and the 2024 Brit Awards.

In 2023, "Prada" (with Cassö and D-Block Europe) topped charts across Europe; both "Escapism" and "Prada" were nominated for the Brit Award for Song of the Year. At the latter, she broke the record for the most nominations received by a single artist in a year, receiving seven. She has also received a Brits Billion Award—becoming one of the first acts to win the award—as well as a Ivor Novello Award and Global Award. Furthermore, she has been nominated for 11 Brit Awards, a BET Award, three Popjustice £20 Music Prize, three Ivor Novello Awards, four Global Awards, and three AIM Independent Music Awards.
