Maryam Nawaz is known for and became the subject of ridicule over the Fontgate scandal. In a corruption case over her family's ill-gotten assets in July 2017, Maryam submitted a declaration dated 2006 stating that she was only a trustee in the company that bought the London apartments, which were the subject of the trial. However, the documents were declared obviously fake by the court because the font they were typed in; Calibri, was not commercially available until 2007, almost a year later.

On 11 March 2023, an audio recording purportedly featuring Maryam Naraz was leaked where she was suggesting to her uncle, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, to portray the murder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf worker Ali Bilal as a car accident done by his party colleagues.
