The municipality has a population of 5,458 (31 December 2023) and covers an area of 1,954.94 square kilometres (754.81 sq mi) of which 1,433.95 km2 (553.65 sq mi) is water. The municipality is bilingual, with the majority (85%) being Swedish and the minority (10%) Finnish speakers.
