Luogotenente

The Italian word luogotenente (Italian: [ˌlwɔɡoteˈnɛnte]; plural luogotenenti) is an etymological parallel to lieutenant, deriving from the Latin locum tenens "holding a place", i.e. someone who fills a position instead of another, as a substitute, deputy, et cetera (king's lieutenant).
