Gopal Singha Dev
Gopal Singha Dev (Bengali: গোপাল সিংহ দেব) was the fifty-fifth Raja of Mallabhum. He ruled from 1712 to 1748 CE.He helped the Nawab of Bengal, Alivardi Khan, in his war against the Marathas. It is said that Maratha commander Bhaskar Pandit invaded Bishnupur under his reign. Gopal Singha Dev cowardly locked himself in the fort and without showing any resistance appealed his soldiers and subjects to pray to lord Madan Mohan (Krishna) so that they can prevent Maratha Onslaught. According to the some legends lord Madan Mohan himself appeared in Bishnupur and defeated Marathas. But the truth was that Marathas couldn't penetrate the strong fortifications of the Bishnupur fort so they retreated without facing any kind of resistance.
