As per the Saharanpur Gazetteer, their origins are largely unknown with some styling themselves as Mughals while others as Sayyids, though in most cases they assert themselves to be descended from Rajput converts. One theory suggests that the name "Garha" is derived from the Islamic custom of burying the dead adopted by the converts, although their is no credible evidence supporting this theory. They have many sub-divisions, often bearing the same names as Rajput clans.
