The first city club, named U.S. Matera, was originally founded in 1933, and in the course of the history of the team it was founded a number of times. In September of 2022 they retook the name and logo of FC Matera.
It is the only team in Lucania that has two national trophies in its list of prizes: The Jacinto trophy won in 1991, and the Coppa Italia won in 2010. They were also finalists in the Coppa Lega Pro in 2017.
