He started his career in the League of Ireland with UCD, before gaining experience of European football with fellow League of Ireland teams St Patrick's Athletic and Shamrock Rovers. Following Rovers' exit from the 2011–12 UEFA Europa League, Stevens joined Aston Villa in the Premier League. After a sequence of loan spells away from the Villans, he signed for Portsmouth, followed by a six-year spell with Sheffield United, before joining Stoke.
