Bactrian (Bactrian: Αριαο, romanized: ariao, [arjaː], meaning "Aryan") is an extinct Eastern Iranian language formerly spoken in the Central Asian region of Bactria (present-day Afghanistan) and used as the official language of the Kushan and the Hephthalite empires.
