GeoServer WFS PropertyIsEqualTo not matching trailing whitespace

I currently have a dataset in a postgis database that contains trailing whitespaces for certain columns e.g. TOWNSHIP. When a WFS request is made through geoserver's WFS functionality, no data is returned (see below)
