In the strict sense, a miracle is an alleged event that defies the laws of nature. It is commonly attributed to one or multiple benign supernatural beings. Examples would be the transformation of water into wine or the resurrection from death.

People often call events miracles that are not strictly impossible but merely improbable. An example for this would be being the lone survivor of a plane crash.

The distinction from a skeptical point of view is that the latter class of miracles describes events that can indeed occur, and where skepticism is directed at the alleged cause for the event, whereas in the former class, skepticism is directed at the event itself.
