nagios: alternatives to SMART disk checking?

I'm attempting to repurpose some older Dell PE 29xx machines. These have PERC RAID controllers so the SMART testing isn't working. Is there an SNMP alternative or do I need to start slogging through OpenManage?

Does smartd launch selftests if "-s" option is not provided?

man smartd.conf states that -s option specifies the time for running disk tests. Are they run if this option is not provided? I mean does smartd try to figure out the appropriate time on his own or simply does not trigger tests?
