Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) is a computer bus used to move data to and from computer storage devices such as hard drives and tape drives. SAS depends on a point-to-point serial protocol that replaces the parallel SCSI bus technology that first appeared in the mid 1980s in data centers and workstations, and it uses the standard SCSI command set.

RAID card w/1x mini-SAS connector : how do I physically connect 16 disks?
I'm looking at a MegaRAID SAS 9240-4i Sgl card which has a single X4 Mini-SAS SFF8087 connector. As far as I know, such a connector can be expanded to 4 SATA disks. So, I would know how to connect 4 SATA disks. However, the documentation says it…

The price difference between SATA and SAS is really very big. Of course I understood, that SAS drives have their advantages, but does this really legitimate a price difference of 100% or more? Should I really spend 1 Euro per GB?
Of course I…

Are there different kinds of Mini SAS to 4x SATA reverse breakout cables?
I have an RPC-4224 case that has 24 bays with 6 Mini SAS ports. I needed a cable to break out one of them into 4 SATA ports, so I went down to my local Fry's Electronics and bought one. The cable came with a "sideband" cable that says optional on…

Do 10m external SAS cables work?
According to the Wikipedia page external SAS cables are specified for up to 10m length.
However, I found it pretty hard to actually find places that sell cables of that length. This made me wonder:
Are there any known problems with using cables that…

I'm trying to figure out if there are any differences between the "R" vs. the "S" of this SAS controller. As far as I can tell, the "S" is a Sun Microsystems re-branded version. I can't find much solid documentation on the "S" version.

I've read here that I can't mix SAS and SATA2 drives on the same controller - is that really true? I understand I shouldn't mix on the same channel, but the same card!?

SSD in early 2008 Xserve Apple Drive Module
Pretty much the title: it possible to use a modern, 2.5″ SSD in an Apple Drive Module on a early 2008 Xserve? This would be replacing a 15k RPM SAS drive, and in most places I've looked that HDD is almost as expensive than a similarly sized SSD.

External SAS cable or adaptor with 90 degree plug

Using an SAS Expander with a SAS Controller of a different brand
I'm planning on assembling a server, and I'm just wondering if a SAS expander by IBM (such as this one) would allow me to use the RAID and other features (Battery-backed write-back caching) of a SAS controller such as the HP Smart Array P400.
Does…

How do I power SATA drives in my DELL poweredge 2850?
I have a Dell 2850 which I've been fairly happy with. It runs RAID 5 to 6 Hot-swap SCSI drives, but I'd like to add some cheap storage. So I bought an Intel PCI-X SATA raid card and tried to install it.
Problem is that my 2U server doesn't have any…
