Cis-trans isomerism

If an alkene contains two identical groups on either end of the double bond, we can use cis–trans terminology to distinguish between geometric isomers of the alkene. If the two groups are on the same side of the double bond, the alkene is the cis isomer. If the two groups are on opposite sides of the double bond, the alkene is the trans isomer.
